While that might sound like a big step towards turning an iPad into a legitimate laptop replacement , the reality is a bit of a letdown, as CNET's Scott Stein recently discovered.

That feature is hidden deep in the accessibility menu, and for good reason -- it's not a traditional mouse implementation, more of an extra pointing and clicking device for those who have trouble with touchscreens. That means comparing the iPad Pro to something like Microsoft's Surface Pro 6 to see which is the better laptop alternative is still a pitched battle. There is certainly some feature overlap, but there are also things that could definitely push you one way or the other.

To that end, I've broken down five things to consider if you're trying to choose one to meet your needs. While the iPad Pro might be getting a new operating system to make it more Mac-like, it still won't have the flexibility of the Surface Pro running on full Windows 10 Pro. While that app catalog is in the millions, you might not find mobile equivalents for the full desktop software or legacy applications you need. Ironically, you still can't fully develop iPad apps on an iPad. Being able to have two, three, four or more apps open on one screen with differently sized windows and quickly switch between them, but also move text, images or data between them is something you take for granted with a desktop OS.

Also, while Apple does just about anything to get you to stick to its devices, Microsoft continues to work on ways to let you jump between working on an iPhone or iPad or Android device and Windows With iOS 11 and 12, working between open apps has gotten better.

Also, when iPadOS arrives, you'll be able to connect external drives and open, copy and save files on the iPad like PDFs, videos, photos and documents. For the moment, though, working with multiple apps is still basically limited to having two apps open side by side, filling the screen. The iPad's Slideover feature lets you drop a third app on top of those, but it has to be from your dock. When iPadOS arrives, you'll be able to store multiple apps in that mode and swipe between them.

Gestures are required to juggle the windows and open and switch apps or just get to the home screen. It works, but it's all simply not as easy or as efficient as working in MacOS. If the OSes and their different capabilities didn't steer you toward a model, maybe the keyboards and styluses will. After all, it's their accessories that make them stand out from plain ol' tablets. And oddly neither of them are included with the tablets. Apple's Smart Keyboard for the Both give you a good typing experience, but the Surface Pro tablet's built-in hinge makes for better positioning and, more importantly, the Type Cover has a touchpad.

That will sort of change with iPadOS. When the new OS was announced, there was some initial excitement around the discovery of Bluetooth mouse support buried in the iPad's Accessibility settings. It is intended to assist with touch input, however. While it shows that mouse input is perhaps possible, that's not what this is.

As for writing and drawing on their screens, the current performance is nearly indistinguishable between the two tablets: Both are excellent and improved from prior models. The OS will also add new annotation tools to help make the whole experience of using the Pencil more seamless. The Surface Pro comes prepared to connect to peripherals. There's also a microSD card slot. Again, though, iPadOS will let you connect drives directly to an iPad and let you browse and open files without copying them over first.

With the iPad Pro you can pick between different amounts of storage and two screen sizes. None of these prices include a keyboard or stylus, either. Microsoft's tablet might seem like a no-brainer here for performance, but the fact is the iPad Pro's A12X Fusion chip is designed for intensive tasks -- from huge spreadsheets and presentations to 3D modeling and 4K video editing. And remember, the hardware is optimized for App Store apps. Also, given Microsoft's increasing cloud focus, it is now more likely the future version of Office will be more web and PWA-based, rather than run natively on the local device.

And rather than porting tools for Win32 application development on ARM, it's vastly improved Windows' on ARM's x86 application support so that programs for that architecture run at near-native speeds even on current versions of the Snapdragon. While Apple and Microsoft have different approaches to dealing with legacy platforms, they have the same fundamental problem to solve, which is having to migrate a vast legacy user base onto newer systems.

Apple's problem more has to do with the fact that iOS, not Mac, is the money-making, hot developer platform. That's also where the majority of its end-users also reside, because that is where all the apps are. There's a lot of legacy junk inside MacOS that shouldn't move over to ARM, and a lot of the work to modernize the platform has already occurred on the iPad. The balance of Apple's investment should happen on the iPad itself, to make it into the true successor to MacOS. The iPad and the iPad Pro soon can almost certainly replace the day-to-day functions for virtually all types of business-class users.

The A-series chips are now powerful enough to handle medium-level content creation and Office-style workloads, and there is no reason why iPad devices cannot be made to accommodate larger amounts of memory and flash storage.

However, there is the issue of high-end content creation for audio, video, and software development. Although third-party services like MacStadium exist, Apple doesn't provide a cloud-based equivalent yet. And while the A-series chips are powerful, they aren't anything like what a new fully specced-out Mac Pro can do it terms of compilation speed with its core Intel Xeons. Over time, the A-Series chips should be able to "self-host" development environments, and cloud-based software development has to be on Apple's radar. It's doubled-down on its relationship with Amazon's cloud, which is estimated to be spending in the tens of millions per month.

But it could be five years before the A-series chips are robust enough to handle things like software builds, even in cloud-based clusters, let alone on devices themselves. So, until that time, the Mac is going to be a safe platform to continue to invest in as an end-user in the content creation fields and for software development. And as we've seen at WWDC, aside from Project Catalyst -- which already has been used in Mojave for Apple's internal apps such as News -- Catalina appears to be very much a minor incremental update.

Content creators and developers will still need MacBook Pros, but your average end-users will not. In the future, there will be a clear delineation between strictly users and developers by which Apple platforms they use to do their jobs. Beginning with the first version of iPadOS, the iPad now has to be considered as a serious mobile computing platform. We can undoubtedly expect more powerful iPad Pros next year, and going forward, other devices that use this OS are likely to appear, such as touch-enabled desktop systems, not unlike what we have seen with Microsoft's Surface Studio.

The Mac and MacOS are not going to die, but for the balance of its customers, Apple has very clearly has chosen its successor. No China, no choice: Why is the worst smartphone year ever.
