The scenery was great and I wish we had done more hiking in the area. I liked La Chaquira best: The park is amazing. It has some of the most impressive pre-columbian statues in South America.

There are a number of burial sites and tombs, and lots of statues. Gods and mythical animals are represented in abstract or realist style. Before the sculptures became protected people used them to decorate their homes! There is also a museum that gives a basic overview of the history of the ancient pre-columbian culture that built these sites. The culture is a bit of a mystery and was long gone by the time the Spanish arrived. Most of the statues and larger tombs were built by this culture between the 1st and 8th century.

Also in the park is La Fuente de Lavapatas, an impressive water sculpture and fountain that consists of a maze of canals, pools and carved images. Time to go to the desert. In Neiva we had to search for a bit to find the transport to Villavieja on a corner outside. The driver offered to take us all the way to our hotel in the desert for 15, COP. Tents and hammocks were much less but we were happy to have chosen a room that night We would even get wet in the room because that night there was a huge storm.

It hardly ever rains so this was very unexpected and turned the road and trails into muddy rivers. It also caused the cacti to flower The Tatacoa desert has red and grey sand formations and lots of cacti and birds of prey. We were not too happy about our room so we changed to La Guaca also 60, but a nice large room with a normal bed.

The first day we walked km to the grey desert to Los Hoyos but the trail there was impossible to follow. We just wandered around and loved the badlands and hoodoos and birds. It was warm but clouded which was great as it might have been too hot for such a hike otherwise.

The next day we explored the red desert that is where our hotel was. The trail was impossible to follow as well but we enjoyed just wandering around. We did not go to the observatory at night. We went during the day for information and they were not exactly friendly. We were too lazy at night to walk there although it was not far. Breakfast at La Guaca was 7, COP and not that great a cheese arepa, a bit of egg, bread and watery hot chocolate.

Our hotel had a new tuk tuk and was very happy to drive us to Villavieja for 10, COP per person. The bus to Neiva was 8, COP. Heya, glad the info was helpful. So yeah it has been while we visited Tierradentro and to be honest it was well worth the trip even if it took us an awful 7hrs because they were blowing up the road yey landslides AS SoniaToronto mentioned above, we pretty much follow the same itinerary starting at 7.

Started at 7. Would we do it again? Definitely yes, breaking down the walk into two different days seems a bit silly to us. We could have easily spent time visiting the museum in the morning opens at around 8. The morning after we got the bus at early morning, think around 6am which took us back to popayan. In short, the easy itinerary is great for archaeology while the hard one is amazing in terms of scenery. Both well worth the hike! The town is nothing special, pretty church but thats it.

We literally had a whole house to ourselves, comfy beds, bathroom s and even a kitchen; no wifi but we didn't really care. Here I'm leaving a couple of links to the articles about Tierradentro on our blog, should you wish to check them out. Everything you need to know about hiking in the area: And everything in regards of accomodation, food and things to do in both Tierradentro and San Andres de Pisimbala: I love Bogota.

Been here for about two weeks. It's an easy city to like Stay north of town If you want to walk - 36th is as far north as you need to go. We stayed at a sweet little hotel on 36th and 17th transverse.

And its a two block walk to Parkway which is a sweet little neighborhood in Bogota - cafes and restaurants and bars. Give the place a look and pay no attention to reviews that disparage the neighborhood. The neighborhood is walkable and secured and friendly - cafes pop up here and there.

And the walking tours Bring a jacket - a sweater and hang out with all the hipsters Medellin we didn't stay as long - but the hotel below is probably the best value in all of Colombia. And again don't be scared by the neighborhood. This neighborhood isn't nice - but its not dangerous either. It's just poor. And the hotel is gorgeous. Have a great time we loved Colombia Thanks for that reminder morewierd.

Do you think it would much improve this itinerary to fly from Bogota to Pitalito? That is, if one is willing to cut Tatacoa and maybe also Tierradentro, that would give extra days to distribute to shorter day trip type explorations. Too old! Also, if you're looking for something to do in Popayan I know a woman who teaches English at a school 15 minutes from there in a town called Timbio.
