The One's picture, on the other hand, seems to go slightly pink again -- this time around the ceiling lights. That's not what you want to see. The One's image looks sharper and has better contrast, but if you look closely, that pesky pink hue is back around the edges of the glowing "Samsung" sign.

Kind of a toss-up: The GS5's image is a little lighter, but the contrast on the M8's image makes it pop a bit more. On a nitpicky note, this set is another example where the M8 has more noise and detail loss if you study the images at full resolution look at the trees. Two solid shots, but I can't help but think the M8's image once again has a slight pinkish hue that doesn't belong look closely along the rails of the bridge while viewing the full-res versions.

Duck you. The birds were obviously moving, so all things aren't perfectly equal, but the M8's image looks better to my eyes. That only happens occasionally, but when it does, it really slows things down. HTC's lower-megapixel approach has its benefits , but the smaller starting size can also be a limitation. The GS5's camera has a mode that can do similar things, but you have to think ahead and take a photo with that mode enabled in order for it to work -- and even with it enabled, I've found it to be rather unreliable.

In the gunmetal grey version that we have, you get a hairline brushed look on the back that does point towards fantastic build quality.

Another noticeable difference at the back is the addition of a secondary camera at the very top of the back, the Duo Camera that helps with capturing depth data. You do have to make sure the back cover is properly in place and that the flap over the microUSB port is closed, but these are very minor inconveniences considering the benefits. It looks like the Galaxy S5 focused on the background rather than my kid, but you can still see the level of detail in the leaves in the background.

The back of the HTC One M8 has two cameras on it, one of which is dedicated to gathering depth of field information. This allows users to refocus shots. The HTC One M8 takes pictures that look fine on its own display and as part of Highlights videos, but the magic fades away if you zoom in a bit or display the images on larger displays.

Unfortunately, the One M8, despite being a 2nd gen phone, looks and performs like a 1st gen flop. Why dont you try the camera indoors, maybe at parties or bars with lower illumination where most of the pics are taken? Then we will see who is the REAL winner.
