There's a navy blue awning with "The Daily Show" headline on 11th Street it so it's hard to miss. The awning is also helpful if it's a rainy day. Two of my friend showed up at the line at about and had about 40 people in front of them. I showed up at about , and the line had extended considerably.
Apparently, the crowd can depend upon the guest appearance, and the Daily Show releases the week's scheduled guests the weekend before. Our guest that night was Jon Hamm. The staff only asked for my name, checked it against the list, and gave us ticket numbers in the 40s. We had reserved four tickets but only three of us were present, so the staff member told us to tell our fourth person to come by the office before and give them my name to pick up the ticket.
Our fourth person ultimately couldn't make it to pick up the ticket, so I assume they gave away the ticket to someone else. There's a decent selection of restaurants on 7th Street, so we walked over and had a late lunch. When we got back at , there were already a ton of people there roped off into sections based on their ticket numbers. We got into the section that was something like and did some more waiting. The staff began letting sections into the studio around The two metal detectors and the small space inside created bottlenecking problems, so the process took a long time for us despite our relatively good numbers.
Inside, we had to line up in exact numeral order based on our tickets. The staff lead us inside and instructed us where to sit. It seemed like it took close to an hour to get everyone seated, but it might just have been because there's nothing to do to pass the time in the studio We were instructed not to even take our phones out or the staff would confiscate them. I had read about this, but the wait felt longer than I had expected. My friends and I were pretty exhausted from conversations for spending the past few hours together in line and at lunch and were pretty much in nap mode by the time we sat down in the audience.
He was pretty funny and got some laughs out of the crowd. He also gives the audience instructions to be super loud with the punch lines during the taping so that the cameras pick the sound up. When the show starts, he sits down and a bunch of cameras and set people descend down on him. The entire audience is there to hear Jon Stewart talk, not you, and the whole point is to get as many people as possible to get the chance to have some fun interaction with Jon Stewart.
Our ticket numbers were in the 40s and we were in the third or fourth row and were pretty close, but when the cameras started rolling, they obstructed our view of Jon Stewart completely. It's really hard to predict where you'll get seated, so you don't need to be near the front of the ticket line to have a good experience. I watch the Daily Show regularly and I do a lot of smiling and chuckling at home, but I found it awkward to laugh loudly during the taping.

Some people in the audience were guffawing and whooping really obnoxiously, so they were clearly more suited to be in a live audience than I was. The crew keep Jon Stewart busy during the commercial breaks, so you just sit and chat for a few minutes. At the end of the show, Jon Stewart thanks the audience and runs out of the studio pretty quickly. The audience exits the studio pretty quickly much faster than entering the studio , and we were back on the street shortly after A friend and I requested tickets and got them about six weeks in advance.
It IS a lot of waiting, as a few other people have pointed out. We got there around or so, and waited til about for them to distribute physical tickets. The waiting itself wasn't bad, and we were number 60 and A LOT of people got there after us, but as far as I know, everyone waiting in line got a ticket and no one was turned away.
Had to be back at for the taping, and there is more waiting to be let in to the studio, then you wait in the studio for the warm up comic. He was actually VERY good and seemed to be having fun. He did a good job getting everyone excited for Jon to come out. Jon did the q and a and then the taping began. Honestly he is even better in person than on the show- he made silly faces during commercial breaks, etc. The guest the night we were there was JJ Abrams and the entire taping was just amazing.
