Edit 2: I should also point-out that some users have also suggested that the design of SanDisk memory cards may also be causing issues - in case you've never used a SanDisk microSD memory card, they are considerably thinner than microSD memory cards from most other manufacturers, and some have suggested that the SanDisk memory cards may be losing contact with the pins inside the memory card slot which makes a lot of sense, if you think about it To back this up somewhat, most not all, but most of the Xperia Z users experiencing problems with 64GB memory cards seem to be using SanDisk memory cards.
Edit 3: Including the requirement to format the 64GB memory card in the smartphone itself so that the "FAT32" filesystem is used - recent versions of Microsoft Windows default to the "exFAT" filesystem. In other words, there's no way around it, at all One person suggested that the 4GB file-size limit doesn't apply to 32GB memory cards, though I haven't tested this, nor have I read it elsewhere. Never had a days trouble with it. The Xperia 4. I just did mine about 1 Hour ago.
Just get it. It will work. Also avoid cheap brands. I got mine from mWave but lots of people sell them.
Avoid buying SD cards from standard retailers. Shop on line for it if you're gonna get it. In other words, cards larger than 64GB will even work in the Xperia Z! But there is an issu Can someone from Telstra tell us when to expect the Xperia Z to start rolling out to customers? I have reformatted it dozens of times using the phone and 3rd party apps, including all the ones recommended in this thread with the same results. Clearly there is a problem here Sony and it should be addressed.

The SD card I had is not counterfeit and it was not bought from eBay. It was purchased directly from PNY on Amazon. This is my first and will be my only Sony phone purchase due to these issues. I have a 64GB Samsung Evo which when first put in my phone was working fine.
I copied some music from the internal storage onto the SD card and started noticing problems with the playback of some songs. Opened in windows explorer and noticed some album folders were full of these strange alphanumeric files - so I wiped the SD card to start from scratch.
That's when the problems started. Can't mount the SD card, can't seem to erase it or do anything with it at all now.

I checked in my old Samsung Ace 2 and after a reformat with their software the SD card worked perfect on there, so the fault is with Sony here.
