A report from Reuters says that online retail giant Amazon is interested in buying prepaid cell-phone wireless service Boost Mobile from Sprint and T-Mobile. Amazon is said to be interested in Boost because it would give the company access to the New T-Mobile wireless network for at least six years, according to two sources Reuters says are familiar with the matter.

The companies have already pledged to sell Boost, currently owned by Sprint, in order to reduce their market share in the prepaid wireless sector.

Such a sale is a requirement if they are to gain regulatory approval for their merger. Why Amazon would want to buy Boost is a bit more opaque. The company could be looking to start selling its own branded prepaid cell-phone wireless service plans via its main website.

This would allow Amazon to offer a one-stop shop for all-things smartphone on Amazon.

It will take time for the company to integrate the two wireless networks so that they work well. Behind the scenes, there will be a lot of activity stitching the network technologies and assets of both firms into one.

The deal could still hit a snag if the companies fail to overcome the lawsuit brought by several states that have said the combination could harm people by leaving them with higher cellphone bills. Pricing for wireless services already started inching up this year. It discontinued traditional two-year wireless contracts, eliminated early termination fees and made international roaming free.

To compete, Sprint also released promotions that drove down prices of wireless plans. The upshot: Consumer spending on wireless services dropped significantly between and , according to Chetan Sharma, an independent consultant for the carriers. After T-Mobile increased its number of customers, it cooled down its promotions.
