Bored of my android phone

Two of our favorite wallpapers apps with automatically-changing images are Muzei and Firepaper —but if you'd like a few more options, check out our full list below. If you own a Nexus device, you already know how far the prompt firmware updates go towards keeping your phone feeling fresh and new.

But what if you could get updates even more frequently? Well, thanks to a new beta program that Google just introduced, that dream is finally a reality. To get an early look at the next version of Android before everyone else, all you have to do is sign up from an eligible device, then accept the OTA update. There are a few more details that you should be aware of, though, so make sure to check out our full tutorial on the subject.

This next tip can go a long way towards revamping the look and feel of your device, but it comes with a few stipulations. If you meet those requirements, and your phone is running Lollipop or higher , you can actually use Android's built-in theme engine to completely change the look of your device's software. An app called Layers hooks into this theme engine and allows you to easily install third-party themes, and I have the whole process outlined in detail below.

Our sixth tip involves a little work, but the payoff at the end makes it all worthwhile. After all, there's no better way to capture that brand-new-phone feeling than by replacing your entire operating system, which is exactly what installing a custom ROM will do for you.

Is it possible to get bored by Android as people get bored by iOS?

To start, you'll have to do some research and find the right custom ROM for you. Once you've done that, you'll need to install a custom recovery —but after that, things get a lot easier, because flashing the ROM itself is actually quite simple. In other words, changing the version and features of the operating system installed on your phone. The modding scene continues to pump out stock-like and heavily customized version of the latest Android builds that are supported on not just the latest handsets, but also many older community favorites.

Installing a custom ROM is certainly more involved than the previous suggestions, but it can be a great way to reinvigorate your handset. Especially if your manufacturer has stopped providing official updates. Xposed is a software framework that opens up much more of the Android OS for easy manipulation, hence the need for root access first. What this means for us users is that we can install a huge range of additional modules that offer up new features, ranging from a range of sound, lockscreen and security features, through to finer grain battery saving options and app controls.

There you have it. Thankfully, Android has plenty of third party developers and manufacturers out there to cater to your customization needs. Ok, it's easy: And they've all attracted some attention in one way or another in recent days Apple , weeks Google, Xiaomi or even months OnePlus. And they all show how banal the entire industry is at the moment. When I talk about banality, I mean the product as a whole. There are hardly any really bad smartphones anymore, all of them are somehow good and pack the typical everyday life neatly. And more? There are the expert debates about notch on which I also took a stand , but which has no relevance outside our bubble. Have you ever advised anyone against a smartphone because it has a notch?

As the only relevant reason? In the light of the Apple keynote, I'd like to take an early personal look back at the smartphone year - and I'm sure you'll find one or two controversial opinions. Pour yourself your beverage of choice to steady your nerves, I'm going to sound off. The OnePlus 6 was perhaps an uninspired smartphone, I'd almost say: Of course it's fast, but otherwise? I still find myself finding myself finding the predecessor more interesting: I don't expect much from the 6T.

Samsung also ventured forward with new smartphones and my disappointment could hardly be greater. I wonder: Why pay hundreds of dollars extra for a minimal upgrade compared to the predecessors? No wonder the Samsung events didn't have any highlights this year. And if they had been there: I especially remember the discussions about the Pocophone F1. Minimalism is written in capital letters here. But let's be honest: Everything else is either cheaply mass-produced or mediocre.

And that's all there is to it. Other smartphones are actually better suited for every user, but one prefers to buy imported goods because one supposedly saves a few dollars. How can it be that a smartphone is so well received, even though it is completely underwhelming in terms of features?

I don't understand it.

Apple has crowned its show of superlatives with three new iPhones. You are bombarded with overwhelming performance stats.

Marketing genius Phil Schiller whirls across the stage and whips the crowd hot for a new age of photography. He heats up an endless hour until the audience joins in with the cheering choir and cheers for the oh so well new features. Google is still to go and we think we already know everything about the third Pixel generation. Obviously, Google is preparing the biggest notch of all time out of some perverse desire to hold the record for themselves.

I admit that I'm a Google aficionado and that Pixel 2 XL is currently the best smartphone in existence despite all the problems. The successor won't change that.
