How to Fix iPhone 6 GPS not Working iOS 12/11/10
Went back into the tomtom app to find out what it was doing and discovered that it now thought my home location was in fact my real location - ie. I am now completely baffled - somehow it has actually updated my location through no connection that I can figure out. There must be some undocumented gps function - which would validate other's comments. You don't have to actually be connected to a wireless network for services like Skyhook to work. You simply need to have the WiFi radio turned on, and it's based on the available networks encrypted or not whether are not you are connected to them.
Since those vehicles are able to capture and record that information at normal driving speeds, it kind of makes sense that iPod touches would be able to use that information in a moving vehicle.
On a related note, on a fairly recent episode of Tech News Today, Tom gave a reason why the Google Street View vehicles may have been collecting the contents of unencrypted WiFi packets. A vehicle driving by a building might not be able to directly see a network inside of that building in its list of available networks, but there might be people outside of that building using that network. In other words, it allowed them to detect otherwise out-of-reach networks by proxy, and also let them build a map of the WiFi networks inside a building.
Useful data for Google Maps. Google should have programmed it to only capture the first 26 bytes of the packets, but because they weren't using anything after that they didn't think of it. Again, this is according to Tom Merritt. Ipod touch does not have a GPS. My doubt goes to the compass. If it has a compass 4g. I guess. Read here: General discussion. any good compass apps for the iPod Touch?
For Apple devices, though, pure GPS chips are not where location awareness features end. Apple uses a number of other technologies to improve the accuracy and speed of its location features. The most important of these is Wi-Fi positioning. This is a technique that uses the Wi-Fi networks that your device can detect nearby to determine where you are.

The iPhone uses this, and so does the iPod touch. In fact, that's the source of the touch's location features. There's an obvious downside to this: If there aren't many nearby Wi-Fi networks or none at all, the touch won't be able to figure out where it is. That means it won't be able to provide turn-by-turn driving directions, suggestions for nearby restaurants, and similar information.
